Yaideliz’s culinary journey began in her grandparents’ kitchen, where she helped her grandfather prepare meals. Here, she first learned to cook, receiving early exposure to food that would eventually lead her to the doors of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida’s Culinary Training Program. Yaideliz’s journey was not without its hurdles. One of her most significant challenges in the program was learning to let go of her old cooking habits. However, she didn’t give up. She persevered, adapting her style to meet professional standards and learning new culinary techniques.
“It was hard to get out of making food my way,” she admits. Chef instructors introduced her to skills like knife techniques and a variety of cultural cuisines, from Italian to African, showing her how precision and specific methods make each dish unique. These structured and hands-on approaches helped her understand employers’ expectations of a professional cook.

Yaideliz’s experience in the program extended beyond cooking; she gained valuable life skills, including effective communication and teamwork. These valuable skills were a significant part of her growth. Stepping out of her comfort zone, she interacted with others, built trust and boosted her confidence. In the program’s group-oriented structure, Yaideliz worked alongside 13 classmates in a setting that mirrored a real kitchen where she could practice her new skills in preparation for the demands of a professional kitchen environment.

With her new skills and confidence, Yaideliz secured a job at a restaurant at one of the attractions. She is excited about this new beginning and eager to apply everything she’s learned. Reflecting on the Culinary Training Program, she calls it “a hidden gem” that deserves more recognition. The program’s comprehensive curriculum, supportive environment, and opportunities for personal and professional growth set it apart from other continuing education programs.
She feels incredibly thankful for the opportunities the program has given her. “I’ve been blessed,” she shares, knowing that the Culinary Training Program has helped her grow and achieve her goals.
