Last year, Elvin moved to Florida from Puerto Rico. With his background in hotel banquet management, he thought he would easily find work in Central Florida’s tourism-based economy. His job search was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I was trying to find a job right here in Orlando when I got caught between the pandemic and the lockdown,” Elvin recalls. He recently shared his experience with Spectrum News 13.
After more than nine months of searching for a job, Elvin went to a job fair that led him to Second Harvest Food Bank. He enrolled in the 16-week Culinary Training Program to learn the kitchen skills he believes will make him a more desirable employee. When he finishes the program in June, he will have front and back of the house experience to bring to the workforce.
“I said to myself, ‘Now is the time to do it because I have the time to do it,’” Elvin said. “It’s something I wanted to do for a long time.”
