September is Hunger Action Month. In Central Florida, more than half a million individuals face hunger and we’re calling on you this month to help Stock The Shelves.
One unique way to honor Hunger Action Month is by cooking the Ropa Vieja. This dish is inexpensive, easy to make, versatile, and lasting. But you may be asking, what does Ropa Vieja have to do with hunger?
The answer is in the legend of the famous Cuban dish, which actually originated in Spain, with its creation centered around solving hunger. There was an old man who took off his clothes and began cooking the clothes to feed his family. Once the clothes had withered away, he was left with nothing that could be used for food. The man began to pray and the withered clothes turned into meat and vegetables that prevented his family from going hungry.
Our version of this dish features A Spoon Full of Hope’s Tomato Basil Soup for Good. Every A Spoon Full of Hope purchase helps support Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida’s Culinary Training Program. The recipe is straightforward, easy to follow, and can be accompanied by a side of rice and beans or serve on a tortilla.
When you’ve finished making this delicious dish, make sure to check out ways to get involved for Hunger Action Month.
