On Saturday, January 21, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida recognized 16 students during a graduation ceremony for its Culinary Training Program. Food bank staff, family, friends and employers celebrated each graduate’s dedication and perseverance in completing the free 16-week course, which provides hands-on culinary workforce training and life skills to adults facing barriers to employment. The goal is to equip students with the skills needed to find successful, sustainable careers in the food service industry.
Roberto “Chef Bobby” Rivera Otero, Chef de Cuisine of Walt Disney World Culinary Concepts, served as the commencement speaker and shared advice he received as a young cook starting out in his career.
“You have to be the leader without the title,” said Chef Bobby. “That means you work hard, show up early, ask questions and help your fellow cook. And hold yourself accountable to those expectations.”
Nerlande, a program graduate and Top Student award recipient in 2022, shared how the program has reshaped her life. Before enrolling in the program, she always wanted to learn to cook professionally but couldn’t find the right job that would allow her the opportunity to expand her skills. Upon graduation from the program, Nerlande began working as a cook at a local hotel. She received a promotion within her first year of employment.
“Joining the Culinary Training Program was the best decision I ever made,” said Nerlande.
Program instructors recognized three students during the ceremony for going above and beyond. The Best Attendance award was presented to Judeline, who was undeterred by rush hour traffic or anything that tried to stand in her way of soaking up the experience and knowledge gained in the program. Two graduates were honored with the Top Student award. Bruce entered the program to help build himself up and pursue a new career. Shavanee enrolled in the program to chase her dream of working in the food industry. Both students arrived early, stayed late, and sought volunteer experiences to propel themselves forward. Congratulations to all three honorees!
An integral part of Second Harvest’s mission to fight hunger in Central Florida, the Culinary Training Program launched in 2013. Since then, more than 440 students have completed the course in pursuit of new careers in the food service industry, thanks to the support of community partners, financial supporters and local employers.
The Culinary Training Program is transforming lives.
