Desperate times call for desperate measures. Crystal knows that all too well.
“We went fishing a few weeks ago just so we could have some meat,” she explains.
Crystal says her family of six was comfortable before the pandemic hit. Between furloughs, layoffs, and inconsistent hours, the only certainty in the last year is that her kids want to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
“We struggled for months to pay bills and feed our four kids,” says Crystal. In the last year, she has sold extra furniture and pawned electronics to pay for groceries. She finally asked where she could get help with food.
The answer was a local food pantry in Mt. Dora, supported by Second Harvest Food Bank. Here Crystal receives milk, eggs, fresh produce, pantry staples, a few treats for the kids, and a friendly smile. Food donations from community food drives, retail grocery partners, local farmers, and food distributors make it possible to distribute a variety of fresh and nonperishable foods to families like Crystal’s.
“It may seem like a small thing to give someone a box of groceries, but it’s not. Food like this brings happiness and joy back into my home. To me, that is priceless. Thank you.”
