At College Park Elementary School in Ocala, the Hungry Husky school market is transforming the lives of students and their families, thanks to generous support from people like you.
The on-campus food pantry provides food for students and families to take home, helping combat the alarming reality that one in six kids in Central Florida faces hunger.
Student council members pack grocery bags with essential items such as cereal, rice, tuna and other nonperishable foods twice weekly. Their efforts go beyond food—they are learning the value of giving back and building a stronger school community. They also host a monthly Fresh Market, where families receive fresh fruits and vegetables, expanding access to nutritious food.
“It’s a really amazing resource for the families,” says Amy, a family engagement coordinator, adding that school attendance and performances improved last school year with the addition of the market.
“Our families work hard to stretch each paycheck, but sometimes it isn’t enough. They are in survival mode, just getting through, and this helps make the family stronger,” says Amy. “It gives them hope that they can get to the next paycheck.”
