Recently, Winn-Dixie and the Winn-Dixie Gives Foundation teamed up with Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida to bring hope to approximately 500 families in Seminole County for Hunger Action Month. This collaboration provided neighbors with much-needed food and relief from the high cost of living, medications, and other essential bills.
“We’re incredibly grateful to Winn-Dixie for their longstanding support in helping to feed hope across Central Florida – especially as more families face difficult decisions about household expenses,” said Derrick Chubbs, President and CEO at Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. “Corporate partnerships like this are vital to sustaining hunger relief efforts and ensuring families have one less worry about accessing the nutritious meals they need to thrive. Together, we can make a lasting impact and strengthen our community.”
One in eight local Central Floridians faces hunger, as illustrated by the lengthy line of families and seniors that began at 5:30 a.m. that morning. Winn Dixie volunteers helped pack bags and boxes filled with a variety of nutritious foods, including shelf-stable items, fresh produce like carrots, broccoli, and apples, and other essentials, providing a balanced and healthy meal for these families.
“We know that no one can thrive on an empty stomach, and at Winn-Dixie, we are dedicated to working toward a future where families do not go hungry,” said Shawn Sloan, North Florida Region Vice President for Winn-Dixie, who volunteered at the distribution. “As a local grocer, we believe it is our responsibility to nourish our communities and empower our neighbors to live their happiest, healthiest lives.”
The collective effort of community partners, volunteers, donors, and advocates allows Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and its feeding partners to distribute enough food for 300,000 meals a day. Each action helps make a significant difference in the lives of kids, families, and seniors facing hunger.
