With the persistent need for food assistance in Central Florida due to the COVID-19 pandemic, volunteers are needed to help keep 300,000 meals a day flowing out of the Second Harvest Food Bank warehouse into the community.
Steve Noppinger started volunteering at Second Harvest in 2019 after he retired. He recently told Spectrum News 13 that, “It’s a great way to give back to the community. Just a few hours a day, makes a big impact here.”
“The biggest need we have right now is in 2021,” says Mindy Ortiz, director of volunteer services at Second Harvest. “After the holidays we know the need is going to continue.”
A calendar of upcoming opportunities can be found online. Volunteer opportunities include sorting food donations, packing meals for kids and seniors, boxing food for families, and more. During COVID-19, volunteers follow social distancing in the warehouse, wear masks and gloves, and sanitize their area before the next volunteer shift arrives.
