After a great kickoff for our Second Harvest Food Bank Young Professionals group, we followed it with a successful panel of Board Members to speak on their Journey to Philanthropy.
Along with 20 plus Young Professional members, we gathered at the Barker House, home of the Rollins College president and their family. We were hosted by Peg Cornwell, a Second Harvest board member and wife to President Grant Cornwell.
We were joined by Board Chair Michele Byington, Board Member Ricky Ly, Board Member Lisa Lochridge, Board Member Matt O’Kane and Board Member Peg Cornwell. During our discussion, we touched on what philanthropy meant for them and how they do philanthropy in their capacity.
Board Chair Michele put it the best way “Philanthropy is about time, talent and treasure”.
The panel ended with an interesting discussion around the financial responsibilities some boards may have and whether that should be a deterrent to join some boards in our community. Ultimately, it comes down to whether the mission of the organization speaks to us and if we’re willing to advocate on their behalf.
