Hunger impacts people in every corner of the country, including our neighbors in Central Florida. That’s why Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida joined Feeding America food banks nationwide this September to take part in Hunger Action Month. This year’s campaign came at a critical time when the COVID-19 pandemic has hurt millions of people living paycheck to paycheck. Due to staggering unemployment rates, Feeding America estimates an additional 17 million people could be food insecure in 2020 as a result of this crisis, bringing the total up to 54 million people.
“Now more than ever, the community should come together to help those in need stock their shelves,” said Dave Krepcho, president and CEO of Second Harvest. “With every donation we receive, we are able to help our network of more than 550 feeding partners serve 66,000 people each day across six counties. Every canned good, every volunteer and every awareness effort makes a difference.”
We have reached the end of Hunger Action Month, and we are SO impressed with how much help we’ve had from the community to raise awareness of hunger right here in Central Florida! Thank you all so much for participating in Hunger Action Month!
There is so much we cannot control right now but one thing we can control is how we show up for one another and how we show support for our community! We are so thankful to our partners Action Gator Tire, Armpocket, Black Rooster Taqueria, 4Rivers, Kendra Scott, PleXus, PDQ, Solight Solar Lights and so many others that helped to put on proceeds events, donations, and more to help our neighbors in need! A huge thank you as well to the City of Orlando, Brevard, Volusia, Osceola and Orange Counties for proclaiming September as Hunger Action Month!
Most importantly, though, is that every $1 raised during Hunger Action Month will be able to provide 4 meals to our neighbors in need. Thank you again to those of you that supported, and congratulations on being a Hero for Hope!
Thank you to each and every one of you for participating in Hunger Action Month! It truly takes a community effort, and we appreciate everything you all are doing to raise awareness of hunger in Central Florida.
There’s still time to take action.
You can fight hunger this fall and all year long.
