Three days a week, Nikolas and seven of his classmates stock the shelves at a School Market. The market is a resource for students to select the food items they need, from a quick snack to pasta to make for dinner that evening.
“I’ve gone through hard times,” explains Nikolas, a local high senior. “People don’t think of food as something students need. Backpacks and pencils, yes, but not food.”
Nikolas and his friends work to remove the stigma of asking for help and create a welcoming place for their peers to pick up items like soup, pasta, beans, peanut butter, and canned vegetables, all for free. Once a month, students can take home fresh produce too.
If we didn’t offer the market, there are kids whose only meal would be school lunch.
