In Central Florida, one in five kids is at risk of going to bed hungry. Lisa, a parent engagement liaison at a local school, sees this harsh reality every day.
“It’s heartbreaking to see a kid who hasn’t eaten over the weekend,” she explains. “They can’t think. They can’t learn. They just start crying. It makes me want to cry too.”
Many of the students she works with have only one parent. There are days when Lisa meets a student who slept in a car last night. Other times, kids confide in her that they are living in an apartment that only has a microwave.
Lisa lovingly gives kids a Kids Pack from Second Harvest Food Bank. Volunteers help fill each pack with popular, kid-friendly snacks and meals, such as shelf-stable milk, cereal, peanut butter, granola bars, and applesauce. Students take the snack packs home on Friday afternoons to enjoy all weekend long.
“We have children and families right here in Central Florida who are hungry,” says Lisa. “Without your help, we couldn’t do anything about that.”
