Earlier in December, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida participated in Feeding America’s national virtual fly-in with a few of our Congressional offices. During this year of high need, we felt it was crucial to invite our feeding partners from each district who has been able to take advantage of CARES funding made available to them. These feeding partners were also invited to share the increased need they’ve witnessed and share the stories of families using their services.
We were joined by a few feeding partners — the Islamic Society of Central Florida, Serenity’s Grace, Faith Neighborhood Center and Christ the King Episcopal Church. This permitted our partners to share their insights into what the need looks like for their community due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We also discussed the importance of a comprehensive COVID-19 response bill that included funding for SNAP, and permitted for additional funding for TEFAP, or The Emergency Food Assistance Program.
Thank you to our Congressional delegation for meeting with us and our feeding partners to paint a clearer image of what hunger looks like in Central Florida.
