In recognition of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday and his civic service to our country, Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings and the Orange County Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Initiative in partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida participated in an “MLK Pre-Day of Service” food supply and distribution project on January 15, 2021.
Hosted at Second Harvest’s new Mercy Kitchen facility, Mayor Demings, Commissioner Mayra Uribe, Commissioner Maribel Gomez-Cordero, members of the Mayor’s MLK Initiative and volunteers assembled shelf-stable meals to be distributed to children in the community. Each box contains either seven breakfasts or seven lunches to provide a week’s worth of kid-friendly meals.
This partnership will provide Orange County residents with much-needed food assistance. 1 in 6 residents is experiencing hunger as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This volunteer effort promotes giving back to the community through service, one of Dr. King’s fundamental beliefs.
Volunteers play an essential role in hunger relief efforts at Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. Six days a week, volunteers can help sort food donations and package meals for distribution. Learn more about volunteer opportunities at www.feedhopenow.org/volunteer.
