It’s been a week since Hurricane Ian destroyed parts of our community. There is still flooding in areas of Central Florida and families continue to reach out for food assistance.
Since the storm hit, food distribution has returned to the level we experienced at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic – enough food for 300,000 meals a day. That’s 75,000 additional meals needed every day compared to the months before the storm, and this heightened need could last for several weeks or even longer.
One of those families is Tammy’s.
At a mobile drop, Tammy explained that she lost power for days in the home she shares with her children, sister, and elderly parents. She is beyond grateful that her family is safe, but after missing several days of work, the cost of replacing spoiled food is more than her already-strained budget can take.
“It was heartbreaking to throw everything in the fridge away. With 5 people relying on me, I honestly didn’t know what I was going to do,” she said.
I am so thankful for this food. It might seem like a small thing to many people, but it’s not for me.”
Today, thousands of people are facing the same stress and uncertainty that Tammy did – not knowing how they will put food on the table while rebuilding their lives. Will you help them have one less worry with your gift of hope today?
Thank you for showing that our community stands together, no matter what we face.
