Hunger Action Month is Back!

September 1, 2022 by Veronica Jaramillo Mucha

September is Hunger Action Month, an annual campaign dedicated to driving awareness and inspiring action to help end hunger in America, both at a national scale and on the ground in local communities.

Food shouldn’t be an impossible choice. Neighbors who have already been working to overcome the hardships wrought by the effects of the pandemic, are now faced with a 10% increase to buy groceries for their family. When difficult times hit, food can be the first thing people forego to make ends meet. Feeding our neighbors facing hunger is only the beginning. Second Harvest Food Bank is invested in job training programs, advocating for access to nutritious foods, and inspiring our community to get involved and in turn leaning into the root causes of hunger and transforming lives.

In honor of Hunger Action Month, we’re asking the community to help “Stock the Shelves” this September. With every action, we get one step closer to making hunger a thing of the past.

The month-long effort encourages Central Floridians to take action for hunger relief every day in September. Getting involved is easy. Hunger advocates can show support in several ways, including:

  • Go Orange! Participate in Hunger Action Day on Friday, September 23rd!See the city of Orlando light up orange to represent the color of hunger for Hunger Action Month. The Amway, ORLANDO sign, Tower of Light, Orlando Eye and the Lake Eola Fountain will all be lit orange to help raise awareness of hunger right here in Central Florida. Businesses and organizations from all over Central Florida will be wearing orange to support Hunger Action Day and to raise hunger awareness. You too can raise awareness of hunger! Wear the color orange in support of Hunger Action Day.
  • 30 Ways in 30 Days – Use our online “30 Ways in 30 Days” calendar to find activities that can be done each day in September to help fight hunger here in Central Florida. Some actions are small like sharing a statistic about hunger in our community via Facebook while some are larger, like supporting one of our community partners throughout Central Florida.
  • Volunteer – Encourage your friends, family and coworkers to volunteer at Second Harvest’s warehouse or Mercy Kitchen.
  • Get social – Show support for the nonprofit’s mission by using #StockTheShelves when posting on social media.
  • Dine, shop or enjoy experiences like Black Rooster Taqueria, White Castle, The Coop, 4 Rivers Smokehouse, My Smart Shirt and Kendra Scott on select days; a portion of each sale will be donated to Second Harvest
    1. Black Rooster will be donating 5% back to the Food Bank every Tuesday!
    2. Eat at White Castle and make sure to round up your check with all donations benefiting SHFB
    3. Visit our friends at 4Rivers WP and The Coop to make a donation at the DipJar
    4. Sip and Shop for good at Kendra Scott Millenia Mall September 24 4-6pm where they will be donating 20% of sales back to SHFB
    5. Looking for special customized apparel and more? Visit our friends at My Smart Shirt where they will be donating a portion of sales back to SHFB

For more ways to take action, visit the Hunger Action Month Calendar and stay tuned to Second Harvest’s social media channels for more ways to participate.

Positive change begins by taking action.
