One of the most significant gaps in childhood hunger in Central Florida is food resources for students outside of the school cafeteria. Without consistent access to the nutritious foods necessary to learn, grow and thrive, students cannot focus on their lessons or reach their full potential.
At Sterling Park Elementary School in Seminole County, PTA volunteers at the Eagles Nest Market help ensure students and their families have the meals they need outside of school. They pack a bag filled with nonperishable foods each week for students to take home. Recently, the market expanded to include a monthly fresh produce distribution open to the whole school.
“Until Second Harvest came around, I don’t think I had ever even thought about passing out produce,” said Sharyn, PTA president and Eagles Nest volunteer.
Watch how this school partnership and fresh produce distribution is making an impact on students and families.
The market previously relied on community donations but joined Second Harvest’s school partnerships program this school year. Sharyn describes the partnership as a “game-changer” because of the consistent supply of nonperishable foods and the addition of fresh fruits and vegetables. Students and families now have access to the nutrients that are imperative to their learning and growth that weren’t available from canned and boxed items.
Fresh produce isn’t just available to families who visit the market.
“Inflation is ridiculous for everyone, not just folks living paycheck to paycheck,” says Sharyn. She helps distribute fresh produce to parents at dismissal and helps students load pre-packed produce bags on the bus to take home.
The students are excited about the variety of food and because there is often something new paired with a familiar item, they’re trying new things. A recent distribution included cauliflower, carrots, sweet potatoes, pineapple, apples and starfruit.
Sharyn added that she didn’t have a program like this when she was younger.
“I know what it’s like to be hungry. I know what it’s like to either have brand-new shoes or have spaghetti on the table. This has really opened up our ability to give back to families, which is something very close to my heart,” Sharyn said.
