Free Meals to Help Feed Kids

March 23, 2020 by Erika Spence

Thousands of students rely on free and reduced breakfast and lunches for their nutrition during the school year. While local schools remain closed in an effort to prevent the coronavirus from spreading, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and school districts across all six counties are providing free meals to kids 18 and under. Second Harvest Food Bank is supplementing school district plans by activating its Summer Food Service Program. Monday through Friday, a fleet of trailers will deliver 5,500 meals to kids in under-served communities.

Three ways to find free meals for kids

  1. Visit https://summerbreakspot.freshfromflorida.com.
  2. Text FLKIDSMEALS to 211-211
  3. Scroll down for a county by county list for your county.

Schools Providing Meals

Starting March 23rd, local school districts will be providing meals for students through their Food & Nutrition Services programs. Families can go to school/site nearest them to pick up food even if they do not attend that school.

Brevard County

Brevard Public Schools, Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS), was approved by the USDA to provide free breakfast and lunch meals to all children ages 18 and younger during the coronavirus-related school closure. Last week, over 122,000 meals were given to children in Brevard County at 13 distribution sites!

Below are some important updates and reminders about our food distribution program:

  • MORE SITES – On Monday, March 30th, we are adding 14 additional distribution sites: Audubon Elementary, Creel Elementary, Discovery Elementary, Endeavour Elementary, Fairglen Elementary, Harbor City Elementary, McAuliffe Elementary, Palm Bay Elementary, Pinewood Elementary, Port Malabar Elementary, Oak Park Elementary, Riviera Elementary, Sabal Elementary, Saturn Elementary.
  • EXISTING SITES – The 13 existing locations will continue to operate: Atlantis Elementary, Cambridge Elementary, Cape View Elementary, Central Middle, Coquina Elementary, Golfview Elementary, Jupiter Elementary, Mila Elementary, Mims Elementary, Sherwood Elementary, Sunrise Elementary, Turner Elementary, and University Park Elementary.
  • TIMES – Meal distribution times for all locations will be Monday-Friday from 10:30 am – 1:30 pm.
  • DRIVE THRU – Parents/guardians should utilize the bus loop to pick up meals. Meals will be placed in the trunk of the vehicle to adhere to social distancing rules.
  • WALKERS/BICYCLISTS – Social distancing for those on foot or bicycles will also be observed.
  • NEW PICK-UP WAIVER – The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services received a temporary waiver so that parents/guardians may pick up meals for their child(ren) due to extenuating circumstances. Effective Monday, March 30, if the child is not able to come to the food distribution site, the parent/guardian must show a valid form of identification for EACH of their children not present in order to receive meals. Examples of valid forms of identification are the following: a student identification card, child’s birth certificate, child’s passport, government-issued child identification card, or a document proving parent/guardian identity and relationship to the child such as a hospital, religious, or day care record. To ensure social distancing, the parent should place the identification of each child not present in the windshield.
  • LUNCH MENU – The lunch menu has been expanded to include easy, heat and serve meals such as chicken tenders and pizza on various days.
  • MOBILE FEEDING – A mobile feeding plan is in the works. Information will be released when finalized.

Free meal distribution changing to 2 days per week, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

TAVARES — Starting next week, free breakfasts and lunches for students will be available for pickup from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays only.

Students will receive four meals on Tuesdays — 2 breakfasts and 2 lunches. On Thursdays, they will receive 6 meals — 3 breakfasts and 3 lunches.

The change, effective the week of April 13, lessens the amount of time employees are away from home while the state is under a stay-at-home order in response to the COVID-19 coronavirus. It also aims to make pickups easier for parents, some of whom have complained that daily pickups are disruptive to their new work-at-home and distance learning routines.

Additionally, because Friday, April 10, is a pre-scheduled day off for students, no meals will be distributed that day. Instead, students will receive Friday’s meals and next Monday’s meals on Thursday, April 9.

Food will continue to be distributed drive-through style or handed out to students who walk or ride bikes. It must be taken off-site to be eaten.
