Summer is a time for adventure, laughter, and growth. But for one in five kids in Central Florida, it can also bring the uncertainty of where their next meal will come from. Recognizing this pressing need, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida provides free meals to kids and teens at 60 locations across Central Florida, ensuring children in our community are nourished throughout the summer months.
At the heart of this initiative are two bright and spirited kids: Taylor and Layla. Their shared passion for art and music shines through their participation at Midway Safe Harbor Center in Sanford. They eagerly embrace the cha-cha slide, revel in outdoor play, and eagerly vie for a seat in the beloved game of musical chairs. These immersive experiences, interwoven with the academic curriculum, enhance the children’s overall educational experience and ignite their creativity and love for learning.
By providing free meals, Second Harvest ensures that children like Taylor and Layla have the nutrition they need to thrive, grow, and enjoy their summer to the fullest.
“We’re just thankful that Second Harvest is providing this food for the kids,” said Quinn Byrd, director at Midway Safe Harbor. “You can see how excited they are about the meals.”
But the partnership between Second Harvest Food Bank and Midway Safe Harbor Center goes beyond just meals. Thanks to the collaboration with Wawa, the kids also receive fresh produce bags filled with a delightful assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables each week. Taylor’s face lights up when she finds her favorite fruit, the kiwi, waiting inside her bag, while Layla enjoys the flavors of kiwis, strawberries, and avocados.
The impact of this support is evident in the overwhelmingly positive feedback from parents. According to Byrd, the kids eagerly returned from a long weekend asking about the fresh fruit, showcasing their genuine excitement and appreciation.
Midway Safe Harbor Center is one of the 60 summer feeding sites sponsored by Second Harvest Food Bank, where well-balanced meals are prepared with a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and proteins. Not only does this alleviate immediate hunger, but it also introduces healthy eating habits, contributing to the children’s long-term well-being.
Thanks to supporters like you, Second Harvest Food Bank, Wawa, and Midway Safe Harbor Center can nurture young minds and bodies, ensuring children like Taylor and Layla and their family experience the joy of a healthy and fulfilling summer.
