Vangie Booth has been part of the Benefits Connection team since 2008 and witnessed how the program has evolved to meet the community’s needs. She helped steer the program through the pandemic, pivoting from an in-person model to over the phone and reintroducing the program to the community. Here are her reflections on 15 years of fighting hunger through the Benefits Connection program.
Benefits Connection has been helping the community for 15 years. How do you feel when you think about that?
When I started working with our neighbors in the community, I was amazed at the difference it made in their lives, helping them get what they needed and treating them with dignity and respect while doing so. If they need to recertify, many return because they feel welcome.
I have seen some of their children grow up. It is bittersweet that some of their children are the ones who need help now. But it is reassuring to know they trust me like family to help them put food on the table.
In what ways have you witnessed the Benefits Connection program grow over the past 15 years?
I have watched the Benefits Connection Program grow from a pilot project into a successful program, strengthening partnerships with DCF, our community partners, and our neighbors. We have set the bar high for SNAP application programs and take pride in our work.
What is your favorite part about your job?
I love that people trust me with their lives and know I will get them the help they need.
