Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, global healthcare company Abbott, and Feeding America want to be prepared for the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
Recently, more than 20 Abbott employee volunteers from the company’s diagnostics facility in Orlando assembled 1,000 disaster relief packs, which will be stored at Second Harvest until needed. Each disaster relief pack can meet a family’s immediate nutritional needs for three days and does not require warming or refrigeration. The packs contain Abbott nutritional products and drinks for adults and children.
In times of disaster, Second Harvest and its network of 500+ feeding partners represent a vital emergency food supply for the Central Florida community. The food bank stands ready to provide immediate and extended relief services to victims of a disaster in Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Volusia counties. Second Harvest works closely with Feeding Florida, State and County Emergency Operations Centers, and other local agencies to pinpoint the areas of need in each county. Disaster relief packs, MREs, and water help sustain our neighbors in the wake of a disaster, such as a hurricane, tornado, or fire, when electricity can be scarce.
Nationally, Abbott and Feeding America have worked together on the disaster pack initiative since 2006, providing people with needed nutrition following a hurricane, tornado, or another disaster.
