The financial stress of providing breakfast and lunch for growing kids while schools are closed for the summer can mean gut-wrenching decisions for local families. The COVID-19 pandemic has only increased the burdens facing families who were living paycheck to paycheck.
Thanks to your support, families with kids 18 and under can turn to Second Harvest’s 65 Summer Food Service sites for free nutritious meals all summer long. Some locations provide a hot meal Monday through Friday. Others distribute a box for families to take home with enough breakfasts and lunches for an entire week.
In addition, families can access the food they need to feed their families at local food pantries or mobile food distributions all summer long.
Here are four ways you can help fight hunger this summer:
- Start a Virtual Food Drive
Hosting a virtual food drive is a fun and easy way to engage friends, family and coworkers in a group effort to help feed kids and families this summer. Get started today!
- Donate Funds
1 in 7 Central Floridians is at risk of going to bed hungry tonight. For every $10 you donate, 40 meals are distributed to kids and families facing hunger.
- Volunteer
Sign up to help prepare meals for kids at Mercy Kitchen, or sort food donations in our warehouse. We’re taking all the precautions necessary to make sure that volunteering is both safe and enjoyable for everyone.
- Advocate
No more homework, no more tests…no more lunch? That’s the reality for thousands of Central Florida children who rely on school meals. Sign the petition to let Congress no child should go hungry when school is out.
With your help, Central Florida families will have food on the table and hope-filled summer. Thank you!
