Watching Our Garden Grow

Girl Scouts with herb gardenIf you recently made a visit to the food bank you may have noticed our beautiful potted herb garden. As someone who lacks a green thumb, I get to see it and envy it every day when I get to work. Today, I got the inside scoop of how we acquired it.

A month ago, Girl Scout Troop 2042 was looking to obtain volunteer hours through Second Harvest and asked if we have any special projects. Dawn Viola, our Executive Chef and Kitchen Director, mentioned to them that we really needed an herb garden.

The girls and moms then researched and sent out letters requesting donations for the garden. Home Depot stepped up and donated all of the soil, plants and pots!

Once they collected all the materials, the troop devoted a Saturday installing the garden for us. They also continue to volunteer on Saturdays at our warehouse. What an incredible Girl Scout Troop! Right?

The Darden Foundation Community Kitchen uses herbs from the garden for our culinary program and also in the food for our catered events. Isn’t it incredible to see what a small group of individuals can accomplish?

We’d love to have you come by to visit our garden and also take a tour of our facility! All you have to do is RSVP here >> and we will send you the details.

Do you have an herb garden? What’s your favorite herb to grow?
