Christian HELP: A Community Partnership Giving Back in a Big Way

Author: Guest Blogger

Christian HELP volunteer training at Second Harvest Culinary Training ProgramAt a United Way meeting the other day, as non-profit companies introduced their new programs, I heard the words over and over: “thanks to Second Harvest, we were able to…”  It is a repeated theme in the community, and a part of nearly every story.  Food is essential to life and Second Harvest is an essential part of many food distribution programs.

Thanks to our Second Harvest Grocery Alliance Partnership, Christian HELP is able to pick up and distribute food to qualified clients and their families as we seek to help them avoid or overcome poverty through family-sustaining employment. What’s really amazing is that thanks to Christian HELP, Second Harvest is able to deliver employment skills to their clients. Read More …

Visitors from Afar

Author: Dave Krepcho

Romanian delegates visitLast week, a Romanian delegation of fourteen government officials toured the food bank as part of an international initiative with the UCF School of Public Administration. Dr. Tom Bryer of UCF brought the group from Bucharest and counties throughout Romania because they are interested in establishing the first-ever food bank organization in their country. They had many questions about structure, governance, financing, volunteers, and anything else you could think of to know about starting a food bank. They came to the right place! Read More …

Celebrating a Special Life

Author: Dave Krepcho

In Memory of Robert Lawrence

Robert (Bob) Lawrence passed away at the age of 86 on December 12 after living a full and happy life.    As a representative of the Community of Christ Church that was home to the original founders of Second Harvest Food Bank, Bob was a passionate advocate for people living in poverty.

Bob brought his passion and concern for the less fortunate to the table. No doubt that the food bank’s foundation is solid when you consider he brought the type of character required to serve in the U.S. Army for 22 years.  He flew fixed wing aircraft and helicopters and was the recipient of a Bronze Star.

Bob knew the food bank was the right thing to do.  He was a visionary in many ways, and always looked toward growing the mission of the Food Bank. Bob’s legacy lives on in Second Harvest’s impact. Bob, thank you for your inspiration to enable us to provide 53 million meals last year. Thank you for providing hope that lives on today.

May Volunteer Spotlight: Barry Pritchard

Author: Melissa Kear

Volunteer Spotlight Barry PritchardAs May comes to a close and June begins, many across Central Florida are finishing with school and getting ready for summer. While summer may mean days at the beach, hanging out with friends, and family trips to some, to others it means missing out on important meals school provided.

One of the ways the community helps us fight hunger and feed hope for hungry children all across Central Florida is through volunteering. Volunteers provide a cornerstone service to our mission: sorting food, helping out with events, collecting donations, and more. We could not do what we do without them.

This May, we are spotlighting a volunteer who has been with us since 2008, Barry Pritchard. Read More …

Hoops Against Hunger

Author: Sasha Hausman

Hoops Against HungerOur very own Orlando Magic are true legends both on and off the court! They proved that this month with Hoops for Hunger. On Wednesday, March 12th the Orlando Magic donated $5 for every ticket purchased to the game that night.

Also, they donated a meal for every point the Magic scored (112 meals!). It doesn’t end there…the Orlando Magic also graciously raffled off two court side seats for an upcoming Magic game to anyone who gave a donation that night. Thanks to all of those efforts combined, Second Harvest Food Bank will be able to provide thousands of meals to our Central Floridians in need. Read More …
