Burgers and Fries??? YES PLEASE!

Author: Sasha Hausman

Five Guys Burgers and Fries
This past Sunday, Bengel’s Burgers Five Guys franchise kicked-off its newest store opening by feeding more than 100 families – nearly 500 people – affiliated with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

In addition to this, Five Guys hosted a food drive for Second Harvest and ended up collecting over 500 pounds of canned food.

We are so grateful to have such wonderful community partner!

On the first Monday of every month, Five Guys Burger and Fries donates 10% of sales made from
5-9 pm to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. It is such an easy way to help out! Sometimes not everyone has a check to write or time to volunteer…but eating a delicious dinner at Five Guys is simple. Remember $1 for us provides up to $9 of food value so your dinner can make a difference!

Since May 2009, Five Guys has donated more than $20,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank. Thank you Five Guys!

A Better Way to Identify Hungry Children

Author: Brady Koch

A Better Way to Identify Hungry ChildrenA teacher looking at a classroom full of children on the first day of school might have a difficult time determining who would be in need of food assistance. The free and reduced school breakfast and lunch program, our Hi-Five weekend program, and our Kids Cafe afterschool program all help get food to these children.

There are common warning signs to look for like lethargy, inability to concentrate, and aggression, but it can still be challenging to identify the need.

A new study published this month in the journal Pediatrics, by University of Maryland School of Medicine researchers examined whether the time-consuming, 18-question Household Food Security Survey provided by the federal government could be shortened and still be effective in identifying hungry children.

They found that there were two questions you could ask that would be as effective as the entire 18 question survey.

Simple Two-Question Survey Can Better Identify Hungry Children

This is a great start to brainstorming exercises we’ve started internally to find ways to enhance our childhood programs.

What do you think of the findings of this study?

CVS/Caremark assembles 5,000 Hi Five Kids Packs

Author: Sasha Hausman

CVS Caremark assembles 5,000 Hi Five Kids PacksCVS/Caremark kicked off their annual conference with this Kids Backpack Assembly Volunteer event where they assembled 5,000 Hi Five Kids Packs.  These packs will go home with elementary school students on Friday afternoon who don’t have access to school cafeterias during the weekend. CVS/Caremark donated $10,000 that was used to provide the food bank with the resources to serve 900 students for the rest of the school year in two schools!

Without the support of corporate partners like CVS/Caremark our job would be much harder. Volunteers help us get food into the hands of needy families quicker and more efficiently. In today’s society there is a renewed spirit in helping fellow Americans. Feeding America is glad that CVS/Caremark show their spirit of giving through involvement with our organization and member Food Banks.
