How the Culinary Training Program Changed My Life

Before this program, I was an assistant manager at a gas station, but even with that job, it was still a struggle for my husband and me to keep our heads above water. When I heard about this program from a friend, I hesitated to call, at first. When I finally did, though, I never could have imagined how much my life was about to change for the better.

In the beginning, it was a huge challenge for me. My hours were cut to part-time at work, and we were relying on my husband’s small income. I was worried I would have to quit and find more work so we wouldn’t get behind on bills. Read More …

April 2017 Second Harvest Culinary Training Program GraduationOn April 28, 2017, Second Harvest Culinary Training Program held the graduation ceremony for Class 20, 21, and 22. During the graduation ceremony, certificates of completion were awarded to 24 students. Our commencement speaker was Chef Nora Galdiano from Sysco. Chef Nora reminded our graduates there is no easy road to success you must work hard but not forget to have fun. Help wanted: Volunteer Chef Instructors

Chef Instructor at Second Harvest of Central FloridaThe Second Harvest Culinary Training Program provides qualified, at-risk and economically disadvantaged adults with the culinary and life skills training needed to pursue a sustainable career in the food industry.

We are looking for volunteer chefs, sous level or above with current food safety certification, to assist our lead culinary instructor with kitchen lab/instruction supervision of our students. ** No prior teaching experience is required, however you must have a current food safety and sanitation certification.

We typically train 12 to 14 students per session, each of whom spend two hours in the classroom, and then three to four hours in the kitchen applying their foundation skills while following an international cuisine curriculum (similar to traditional culinary schools). Time commitment and responsibilities are outlined below, along with sign up information.

When you choose to dine with us, you become part of our mission to fight hunger in our community and change lives. Our first Guest Chef Night event will be on Thursday, August 29 with Chefs Hari and Jenneffer Pulapaka from Cress Restaurant. 

Each year, Hari and Jenneffer recognize their restaurant’s anniversary in a unique way with events  surrounding their spirit of giving back. This year, Second Harvest is honored to be a part of Cress’s fifth-year anniversary as we welcome Hari and Jenneffer into our community kitchen for our first Guest Chef Night, with proceeds going to Second Harvest hunger relief programs to benefit our neighbors in need.
