Summer camp is filled with memories of playing outside, making new friends, and lots of new snacks. But how do children who receive free and reduced meals during the school year stay fed at camp?
Through Second Harvest’s Summer Food Service Program, Taalyiah and his friends are able to receive hot, quality food that they enjoy all days of the camp. They enjoyed turkey corndogs with whole grain breading as they told me about their favorite foods.
When asked his favorite thing that he had eaten so far, the answer was clear: pasta and marinara sauce.
“I can’t eat milk or cheese, so it’s nice that I can eat the meals too,” Taalyiah told me, “I love pasta and I love the food I get.”
The impact of the program can be felt at Chambers Park in Kissimmee, where Taalyiah and his friends received a warm, balanced lunch every day. Every meal has USDA recommended servings of protein, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and dairy (optional for Taalyiah).
It is with help like yours that they can eat some of their favorite meals when school is not in session.
