Smithfield Foods and UFCW donate 120,000 Servings of Protein to Second Harvest

Today, Smithfield and the United Food and Commercial Workers donated 120,000 servings (30,000 pounds) of much-needed protein to Second Harvest Food Bank as part of the ‘Feeding the Hungry’ Tour.

Feeding the Hungry is a joint program of the UFCW and Smithfield to donate and help deliver 20 million servings of protein over three years to food banks and non-profits across the country.

“In these difficult economic times, low-income families are often very challenged to be able to afford high-quality, healthy food.  Protein is such an important part of that.   This donation represents a vital piece of the nutritional puzzle for those families, and also demonstrates an incredible, caring generosity on the part of Smithfield and the UFCW,” said Dave Krepcho, President and CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

Last month, Smithfield Foods along with Richard Petty Motorsports announced a partnership for the 2012 NASCAR Season. Smithfield brands include Farmland, Eckrich and Curly’s, among others, as well as Helping Hungry Homes®, which will be the featured brand for the Daytona 500 on Sunday, February 26.

In addition to our friends from Smithfield, we were joined by Richard Petty, NASCAR Hall of Famer and co-owner of Richard Petty Motorsports, and Aric Almirola, driver of the No. 43 Smithfield Ford Fusion.

One in five Central Floridians struggle with hunger. This donation will help feed hungry families, children and seniors in Central Florida. Thank you Smithfield and United Food and Commercial Workers for helping to fight hunger in Central Florida.
