Rock On: Metallica Fans Pack Boxes of Hope

Over forty Metallica fans gathered in the warehouse of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida to volunteer on May 22. The second Day of Service was held in partnership with the All Within My Hands Foundation.

During the 2019 installment, volunteers donning Metallica t-shirts helped sort food donations and pack boxes of food for local families. Jamming to Metallica’s greatest hits motivated this group to create 326 boxes of shelf-stable food for families in the Central Florida area.

Volunteers came from as far as Lake Wales to pitch in, some bringing their kids to pass on their love for Metallica and community service. Chris and his wife took a day off from work to be a part of the Day of Service opportunity. They first learned about Second Harvest when their son volunteered at the food bank in high school. He seemed to enjoy it, and when they heard about this special opportunity, they gladly signed up.

“We’re big Metallica fans. And I love that they donate in every city they tour in,” said Chris. After volunteer orientation, he was impressed with the size and scale of Second Harvest’s reach through its 550 feeding partner network. “The idea that Second Harvest can feed so many people is amazing. Instead of buying fast food for someone on the corner, I’m able to help get more nutritious food to more people.”
