In the aftermath of Hurricane Michael, we put out a call to action to our volunteers, donors, advocates and elected officials about our need for volunteers for a new shift constructing disaster relief boxes.
That call to action was quickly responded to by many volunteers, and two very special guests – Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy and Congressman John Lewis. Rep. Lewis happened to be in town and joined the Congresswoman to lend a helping hand.
Together, they helped put together disaster relief boxes that were sent to our sister food banks, Second Harvest Food Bank of the Big Bend and Feeding the Gulf Coast. Both of these food banks sustained damage from Hurricane Michael.
The Representatives also sat down with our culinary training students and heard about their daily struggles. Congressman Lewis shared his personal story from the civil rights era and his fight to ensure everyone, no matter their race, sex, religion, etc., was given the same opportunities as everyone else.
