Beyond the Table: Social Determinants of Health
March is National Nutrition Month, a time to focus on how what you eat affects your health. There’s more to consider about your health than simply eating better and exercising. According to the County Health Rankings Model of Health, our personal health choices only account for about 30% of our overall health.
Your health is significantly influenced by factors beyond your individual control, such as access to healthcare, where you live, and your social circumstances like income, education, and support from friends and family. These are known as the Social Determinants of Health. They include the conditions of your birth, life, work, leisure, and worship, as well as your age. These factors deeply affect your daily health and your ability to make healthy choices.
You Help Students Succeed
Everyone needs a helping hand sometimes. That’s an important lesson for all of us, especially the next generation.
That can look like tutoring for a math test, an extra set of eyes on a research paper, or sometimes, food to fuel student success.
Meet Hope Helps, Where Two Women are on a Mission
“There’s no better feeling than being able to just hand something to someone who needs it and wasn’t sure how else they were going to get it,” says Patricia, Director of Client Services at Hope Helps, one of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida’s feeding partners.
Lead by an all women executive team, Hope Helps fights hunger and homelessness in Seminole County. The food pantry is open multiple days a week, allowing neighbors to choose which food items to take home. Options include fresh produce, lean proteins and pantry staples like canned goods and cereals.
“Just coming to get the supplemental food is a game-changer for people,” explains Joan, Hope Helps’ President and CEO.
