Here is what he wrote about her:
On the surface, Mindy Ortiz’s job may not appear glamorous. After all, she spends hours every day in a warehouse, usually dressed in comfy pants and a sweater. But look a little deeper, and you’ll see the beauty of the impact she is making in our community. As the volunteer services and food drive manager at Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, she organizes an army of volunteers who fight hunger and feed hope in our region. Under her direction, these volunteers collect, sort and box food; assist in the office and help raise urgently needed funds.
In her eight years at Second Harvest, Mindy has overseen tremendous growth in the number of people who donate their time to our cause. Last fiscal year, she managed more than 10,000 volunteers who put in a collective 35,000 hours – helping us distribute more than 30 million pounds of grocery products to our partner agencies. She does it all with a warm personality and constant smile that communicates how much we appreciate our volunteers.
At night, Mindy goes home to her husband of 10 years, Orlando Ortiz, and their 4-year-old son, Jaden. The family enjoys visiting local parks and indoor play places together. Since Mindy spent her early childhood in Puerto Rico, she’s also making it a priority to introduce Jaden to his cultural heritage. Between raising a son, working full time and maintaining a house, Mindy doesn’t have much time to shop for clothes or go to the salon. And, since she recently lost more than 40 pounds, she’s ready to refresh her look. “I’d love to rock some nice slacks or a dress – something to feel a bit more feminine,” she says.
