This past Tuesday, the Orlando Magic hosted their first-ever Magic Fit Kid Chef Celebrity Showdown. Four families from our Culinary Training Program were invited to compete in a cook-off with Magic players, Victor Oladipo, Tobias Harris, Elfrid Payton and CJ Watson along with their mothers to see who can prepare the most tasty, healthy meal.
The families were judged by a celebrity panel including Emily Elynn (Food Network, Cupcake Wars), Lucille O’Neal (President of the NBA Mom’s Association), Alex Martins (CEO, Orlando Magic), and Chef Charles Dodson (Walt Disney World Executive Chef).
Current culinary student Karen Smith and her son, along with Tobias Harris and his mom won first prize. Karen is currently in week 10 of Second Harvest Culinary Training Program. Karen loves to cook and bake. Her dream is to become an Executive Pastry Chef. She loves making desserts and dishes that are rich in flavor.
Competing with Karen was her son Josiah who is a 6th grader at Howard Middle School. Josiah is very interested in electronics, he likes to take things apart and put them back together to see how they work, he enjoys Legos.
The winning prize included court-side seats to a future Magic home game, brand new cooking utensils and equipment, a nutritious cookbook, $2,000 grocery shopping spree. A “Behind the Scenes” Tour at Epcot with former Magic players, exclusive culinary demonstration and Chef Table experience with Disney Executive Chef Charles Dodson at a Disney Resort dining location. Compliments of the Orlando Magic and Disney.
Congratulations, Karen! And special thanks to Orlando Magic for offering this unique, one-of-a-kind experience for our Culinary Training students.
