Lakeside Recreation Center in Kissimmee is the latest addition to our Kids Cafe Program.
The Parks, Recreation and Leisure Division’s Center is located in Mark Durbin Park and adjacent to Cypress Elementary School.
As many as fifty children daily will now be able to enjoy a nutritious supper once their school day is over. To show their appreciation, the youngsters presented us with a colorful and personalized “Thank You” poster .
There was genuine excitement in the air as the kids posed for a group photo. Some asked for seconds and all expressed appreciation for the meals. Recreational Coordinator Kristina Thornton will incorporate the meal service into the center’s existing after school activities which include the Dynamic After School Hours Program, or “DASH”.
Prior to hosting a Kids Cafe, these children would have to bring their own food. The suppers they now receive from Second Harvest are nutritionally balanced and meet dietary requirements for school-aged children. Milk is served daily along with a freshly prepared four component meal.
Second Harvest Food Bank sponsors 12 Kids Cafes in 3 counties. The program is subsidized by the State of Florida’s Bureau of Child Nutrition. Since 1998, Our Kids Cafes have served over 1.6 million meals to children in at-risk, low income communities.
We are pleased to partner with the City of Kissimmee as we add this third Kids Cafe in Osceola County. Oak Street and Chambers Park Community Centers have been participants for many years.
