July Volunteer Spotlight: Julie Morby

Julie MorbyIt’s rare to find someone who is as passionate about reducing food waste and feeding people as one of our organization’s pioneers, Dave Pearlman. Founder and owner of Kane’s Furniture, Dave was a man who made it a daily goal to fight hunger and feed hope in Central Florida. To honor his memory, we created the David Pearlman Spirit of Volunteerism Award, an award given to that rock star volunteer who, like Dave, goes above and beyond in our community to bring hope to our hungry neighbors in need.

This month’s Volunteer Spotlight features recent David Pearlman Spirit of Volunteerism Award winner, Julie Morby.

In 2008, through a work related volunteer group her husband signed them up for, Julie began volunteering at Second Harvest. It only took joining us once for Julie to realize wanted to find other ways to volunteer, and boy did she!

Between being a committee member for Taste of the Nation and Wine Women & Shoes, volunteering with Canstruction, and joining in on the Letter Carriers Food Drive energy, Julie embodies what it is to give back to your community. When asked why she continues to volunteer with our food bank, and she responded:

I think Second Harvest responsibly uses donations and stretches donated products and dollars as far as possible. The services provided by Second Harvest make a real difference in our community. I am most encouraged by the progress being made in providing training and job experience to the students in the culinary program. Second Harvest is trying to find a way to end hunger in Central FL and they are not just throwing food at the problem.”

Volunteering for fundraising events, Julie loves being able to educate and engage the community about Second Harvest’s mission. Sorting food in the warehouse and assembling Hi-Five Kids Packs allows her to be an active part in making sure children in Central Florida are not going to bed hungry. It’s easy to see why Julie is such a Hunger Hero. Thank you Julie, for all that you do in feeding hope and fighting hunger in Central Florida!
