National Farm Bill Call-In Day on Sept. 13

Join anti-hunger advocates from across the country on September 13th from 9 AM – 6 PM and tell Congress to protect SNAP and strengthen TEFAP during Farm Bill negotiations.

The House and the Senate passed two different versions of the Farm Bill. The Senate version protects SNAP and the House version strengthens TEFAP.

Every day, SNAP puts food into the hands of 765,000 children, veterans and seniors in Central Florida and these cuts will result in an overwhelming burden to food banks like ours. For every meal that Second Harvest provides, SNAP provides 12. If SNAP gets cut, then food banks like ours – and our feeding partners – will be overrun. We will not be able to handle the increased demand.

Twenty percent of our distribution is due to TEFAP funding, which includes nutritious food, like fresh produce, dairy, and staple items we all have in our pantries. We cannot do this alone.

We need your help to keep the phones ringing off the hook to protect SNAP and strengthen TEFAP in the final Farm Bill. Two minutes can help prevent Central Floridians from going hungry.

Call 1-888-398-8702, and enter your ZIP code to be connected with your Representative. Press 1 for your House member and Press 2 for your Senator.

Here are some sample talking points:

I am calling on behalf of Second Harvest Food Bank and live in Central Florida which the Representative serves.

Please protect SNAP – a critical program that helps thousands of Central Floridians, including children, seniors and veterans – by supporting the Senate SNAP provisions of the Farm Bill.

Please increase TEFAP funding in the final Farm Bill so food banks, like Second Harvest, can meet the demand for nutritious food in our communities.

I’m counting on the Representative to pass a strong Farm Bill that protects and strengthens federal nutrition programs and helps hungry people in Central Florida.
