Hunger Action Month is here!

September is Hunger Action MonthIt’s so hard to believe that it’s already September! The good news about flying through time, though, is that we’ve landed right on Hunger Action Month! Hunger Action Month – or HAM – as we like to call it, is a time when we ask the community to lend their voices and spread the word about hunger right here in Central Florida.

Did you know that last year Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida distributed nearly 64 million pounds of grocery productsthe equivalent of more than 53 million meals – to partner programs such as food pantries, soup kitchens, women’s shelters, senior centers, day care centers and Kids Cafes? Our community turns to Second Harvest’s partner agencies more than 71,000 times per week. THIS is why we need the community’s help to spread the word about hunger right here in our very own backyards.

We have so many great community partners helping out this year during Hunger Action Month, and are so grateful for their involvement! For example, the City of Orlando will be lighting up Orange on Thursday, September 4th for “Go Orange” Day, since orange represents the color of hunger. Look out for the orange lights at The Amway Center, Fountain at Lake Eola, and Solaire at the Plaza!

Another great supporter of HAM is Hawkers Asian Street Fare. Every Tuesday in September from 4pm-6pm, 10% of all sales made at Hawkers will go to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida! Be sure to stop in and get some great food while supporting a great cause!

These community partners aren’t the only ones that can get involved and help– you can too! Check out our “30 Ways in 30 Days” calendar to see 30 different ways that you can help fight hunger in Central Florida throughout Hunger Action Month!

Go Orange on September 4! Also, don’t forget to WEAR ORANGE on September 4th for “Go Orange” Day and to check out Second Harvest’s HAM events!

We’ll be hosting a “Feeding Hope Happy Hour” on Wednesday, September 10th  and a recording of National Public Radio’s popular podcast “The Moth” on Saturday, September 13th. We hope to see you all there!

We can’t wait to see what ways you all come up with to support Hunger Action Month. Thank you all for taking action against hunger right here in Central Florida and for taking the steps to become Hunger Heroes!

Ps. Don’t forget to share with friends!
