Did you know 40% of food produced in the United States goes to waste every year? At the same time, 1 in 8 Americans struggles with hunger. To put this into perspective, on average 400 lbs. of food per person every year goes uneaten, which is equivalent to 900 bananas!*
Today, Friday, April 27th, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida joins food rescuers nationwide in celebrating National Stop Food Waste Day and our 100+ Food Rescue Partners. Our network of local and national retailers, manufacturers and growers recognize the importance of not allowing wholesome food go to waste. They choose to rescue this food from the waste stream and donate it to the food bank where it is sorted, stored and distributed to more than 550 feeding partners across 6 counties.
In 2017, 80% of the food distributed by Second Harvest came from food rescue partners, enough to provide 44 million meals!
On behalf of Second Harvest Food Bank’s Food Rescue Team, we’d like to thank our partners in the Retail, Supply Chain, Agriculture, and Hospitality Industries for not only diverting nutritious surplus food but continuing to help feed our neighbors in need.
