Did you know there are health benefits to volunteering? According to the Corporation for National & Community Service, “those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability, and lower rates of depression later in life than those who do not volunteer”. It also helps strength the ability to solve problems and connect with others, making it a great family activity.
That’s why Joy Kleiman decided to bring her son Ryan to volunteer with her at Second Harvest. Because Ryan was initially very quiet, Joy and her husband, who also volunteers sometimes, wanted an activity for their son that would help build his confidence level and provide a new experience.
Ryan now volunteers in many different areas at the food bank, helping with different tasks. What he really enjoys doing is working in the cooler area of our Agency Mart. This is the area where our agencies can browse and choose extra items for their orders, a new addition since moving into our new building.
Since volunteering in June 2014, Joy and Ryan have volunteered a combined total of over 260 hours! Now that’s quite the mother son duo, and one we are happy to have at the Second Harvest, nearly every Tuesday and Thursday. Thank you both for providing such an invaluable service to the food bank for our neighbors in need.
If you are interested in volunteering with your family, friends, school, church, company, or individually, you can view available shifts on our Volunteer Hub. Make sure you check out more information about our Family Nights while there!
