On Thursday, June 20th, guests gathered together for a delectable 4-course meal in complete darkness for a great cause. Dining in the Dark, generously sponsored by Jewett Orthopaedic, is an eye-opening culinary experience that brings all of your senses to life. Together, Lighthouse Central Florida and Second Harvest Food Bank shine some light upon two very important issues at hand, vision impairment and food insecurity.
Chef Jill Holland of SHFB’s Catering for Good and Chef Wendy Lopez, Executive Chef at Reyes Mezcaleria combined forces in the kitchen and collaborated on the menu. The evening featured dishes such as a tuna tostada, crab salad, honey-infused pork loin chops, and a decadent chocolate hazelnut tart. Our guests were on their own to taste, smell and feel their dishes in order to make guesses as to what exactly they were eating and drinking.
You’re probably wondering whose job it was to serve everyone in complete darkness. That’s where the Orlando Police Department’s SWAT Team comes in! The SWAT team used their night vision goggles to maneuver around the event space, serving our guests and tending to each of their needs throughout the evening.
This unique event brings awareness to all of us who often take our vision for granted as well as the many who tend to forget that 1 in 7 people in Central Florida are unsure as to where their next meal will be coming from. Thanks to our incredible sponsors and everyone that attended Dining in the Dark, we were able to raise over $15,000 for each organization! For Second Harvest Food Bank, that equates to 60,000 meals for our neighbors in need! Those funds will help support essential programs involving both hunger and vision rehabilitation within our community.
A huge thank you to everyone who supported this event and made it such a huge success and of course, to our Presenting Sponsor, Jewett Orthopaedic. We’d also like to thank our table sponsors, Advent Health, Sullivan Benefits, Regions Bank, Demetree Global, Suntrust Bank, Withum and Universal Orlando!
We couldn’t possibly do this without our partnership with both the Orlando Police Department’s SWAT Team as well as our celebrity chef, Wendy Lopez. We’d also like to thank Gordon’s Food Service, Lucky’s Market and Newton Skyside for providing donations for our dinner.
