It is fitting that National Truck Driver Appreciation Week falls in the middle of Hunger Action Month. While anti-hunger advocates are raising awareness to strengthen hunger relief efforts, our truck drivers are working tirelessly behind the scenes to safely and securely collect, transport and distribute food for our neighbors in need.
This team was able to accomplish the following feats of food rescue and distribution last year:
- The Grocery Alliance program collected produce, bakery items, meats and dry goods from retail partners and distribute over 21 million meals.
- Second Helpings rescued enough prepared food from restaurants and hotels to provide 214,780 meals at soup kitchens, shelters and feeding partner sites with a meal program
- More than 5 million meals were distributed through mobile food drops. This unique and innovative approach to hunger relief features a semi-truck loaded with between 10,000 – 20,000 pounds of fresh produce and nutritious foods delivered to underserved communities.
