Community Comes Together to Help Over 1,200 Homeless Central Floridians

Community Outreach FoodOn June 6, 2014, over 1,200 Seminole County homeless received aid at the Community Outreach Resource Fair. In partnership with Second Harvest, Universal’s Bite Camera Action, and others, New Directions Community Outreach, Inc. hosted their free annual event in Casselberry, with the goal of providing local homeless residents with access to everyday services that some may take for granted.

Thanks to the support of local community organizations, some of the services provided included:  free medical care, including dental and eye glass service; access to low-income housing; employment services; family food boxes; hygiene materials, and Lynx bus passes. Our homeless neighbors also got to enjoy free food served throughout the day, music and live entertainment, and a photo-op with “Officer McGruff” of the Seminole County Sheriffs’ Office.

Second Harvest Food Bank was there with fresh pallets of produce and bakery product, such as strawberries, limes, lettuce, bread, cakes, and other bakery items. This is on top of handing out 440 purple, Universal backpacks, filled with food, thanks to Bite Camera Action. In fact, over 7,227 pounds of food were distributed, benefiting over 1,200 people!

This community wide effort had an amazing affect for Seminole County homeless. Together, we are able to care for less fortunate homeless individuals and families, providing food, fun, and opportunity, they hadn’t had otherwise. Together, we are able to fight hunger and feed hope.
