Central Florida Scouts Go Door-to-Door “Scouting for Food”

Every November, local Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers set out to fight hunger during their annual “Scouting for Food” campaign. This year, the Central Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America collected 55,117 pounds of food for a local network of feeding partners, including Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

On Nov. 2, the Scouts visited nearly 500,000 homes and placed door hangers with information about the annual food drive. A week later, the Scouts returned to collect donations.

“Hunger is a daily struggle for one in seven Central Floridians,” said Dave Krepcho, president and CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. “Every donation makes a difference. Thanks to the Boy Scouts and the generosity from the community, more than 40,000 meals will be given to children, families, seniors and veterans in need.”

“Our ‘Scouting for Food’ campaign is the perfect example of the Boy Scout promise to help other people at all times,” added Eric Magendantz, CEO and Scout Executive of the Central Florida Council. “We’re humbled year after year to see the community step up and show tremendous kindness and generosity to their neighbors in need.”

AdventHealth sponsored this initiative as food insecurity is one of the not-for-profit health care system’s top concerns. The recently completed Community Health Needs Assessment shows that nearly a third of people in our region say they lack access to quality, affordable, healthy food.

“We can provide patients with the most advanced medicine. We can ensure they have access to the right prescriptions. But if our patients and neighbors can’t access healthy foods, we will continue to see the impacts of poor nutrition,” said Shannon Gravitte, AdventHealth’s vice president of Public Affairs. “This is a great opportunity to partner with Second Harvest and the Boy Scouts to help feed the most vulnerable in our communities.”
