Foodie Bloggers Come Together to Help Feed Hope with New Cookbook

Author: Melissa Kear

Where Slow Food and Whole Food Meet: healthy slow cooker dinners from our kitchens to yours cookbookWorking with local bloggers is nothing new to us at Second Harvest. We have been lucky enough to have a wonderful relationship with a lot of talented bloggers located right here in Central Florida: to help promote our special events, participate in campaigns, and even volunteer here at the food bank. This year, a group of bloggers, both local and across the country, did something a little extra special for the food bank, they created an entire cookbook around healthy, slow cooker recipes, and dedicated sales back to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

The “Where Slow Food and Whole Food Meet: Healthy Slow Cooker Dinners from our Kitchen to Yours” cookbook is full of slow cooker dinner recipes from over 30 bloggers in the United States. It includes recipes for delicious meals like Raspberry-Chipotle Chicken Tacos, Thai Coconut Curry Beef and Broccoli, Spiced Lentil Stew, and even a recipe straight out of Second Harvest Food Bank’s Darden Foundation Community Kitchen by our very own Chef Instructor, Jill Holland, for Slow Cooker Island Pulled Pork. There is sure to be something great for all your tastes. Read More …

Whether you ride a motorcycle or not, please plan to join us at Hogtoberfest 2014 for a great day of food, fun, and music. The festival takes place on Saturday, October 18th between noon and 9 pm at Orlando Harley Davidson in Orlando (next to I-4).

Here’s what you can expect: First, you’ll enjoy live music on the main stage from local classic rock bands, culminating with a free concert at 7 pm by rock legend Eddie Money. While at the festival, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase delectable food and beverage offerings created by none other than the Chefs of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida’s culinary training program. Introducing Judie Kellogg, Second Harvest Grocery Alliance Program Manager

Author: Guest Blogger

judykellogIt’s been a Summer of positive changes since stepping into the Grocery Alliance Program Manager roll in May.  I have to tell you the last 3 months have been a wonderful experience in meeting and learning about the many internal and external partners that make our Grocery Alliance retail rescue program among the top 10 in the nation.

My first order of business was to introduce myself to our Grocery Alliance Staff in the Orlando, Volusia and Brevard branches. Meeting each one of our 10 drivers and the warehouse staff has been a great experience in seeing firsthand how they interact with our grocery stores and play a big part in the partnerships we have. My weekly ride-along has been instrumental tool in the learning and being introduced to the process that our over 300 retail donors participate in. Read More …

Hunger Action Month is here!

Author: Maureen Mikel

September is Hunger Action MonthIt’s so hard to believe that it’s already September! The good news about flying through time, though, is that we’ve landed right on Hunger Action Month! Hunger Action Month – or HAM – as we like to call it, is a time when we ask the community to lend their voices and spread the word about hunger right here in Central Florida.

Did you know that last year Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida distributed nearly 64 million pounds of grocery productsthe equivalent of more than 53 million meals – to partner programs such as food pantries, soup kitchens, women’s shelters, senior centers, day care centers and Kids Cafes? Our community turns to Second Harvest’s partner agencies more than 71,000 times per week. THIS is why we need the community’s help to spread the word about hunger right here in our very own backyards. Read More …
