How Do You Measure a Year?

Author: Erika Spence

The rock musical Rent asks, “How do you measure a year?” One year after graduating from Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida’s Culinary Training Program, Susan Anderson measures her year in three words: Courage. Discipline. Confidence.

Anderson originally applied to the inaugural Culinary Training Program class in 2013, but delayed entry because she wasn’t ready. She hesitated to take such a big leap and change careers. Her wages stagnated, she lost her car, and then her home. She reapplied with the hope of a new beginning for her family.

“I was working in retail management and food service but my career was stalled,” recalls Anderson. “Completing this program gave me the courage to step outside my comfort zone and see the opportunities for better wages and marketable skills.” Read More …

A Date Night that Nurtures Community

Author: Maria Shanley

Date Night with the ChefSecond Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida helps feed people in six counties. For us, food is a powerful connection point. It’s a central fact of life. It can be a celebration – but for too many, getting enough to eat can be a struggle.

We are launching Date Night with the Chef to continue to nurture our relationship with the community. It is part of our Catering for Good program, which welcomes the public into our kitchen and event spaces for meetings and celebrations. They discover firsthand our passion for providing fresh food and quality ingredients, and our commitment to quality.

Date Night with the Chef is a cooking class/communal meal that offers a change-of-pace evening out that is as entertaining as it is educational. People have the chance to come together to prepare a four-course menu under the watchful eye of our award-winning chef and instructor, Jill Holland.

Chef Jill will show guests how to master a caper remoulade, create the perfect rollatini, and whip up a chocolate espresso mousse shooter. They will go home with recipes and a little more confidence in the kitchen. Read More …
