ARTful CANception

What happens when you combine a team of Central Florida architects, engineers, contractors and designers with about 1,500 canned goods? Canstruction – an annual competition where teams design and build structures made entirely from canned foods … all within an 8’x8’x8’ space.

Inspired by Canstruction sponsor, Orlando Museum of Art (OMA), this year’s art theme: ARTful CANception, encouraged our 13 teams to use their 8’x8’x8’ space to push the traditional boundaries of artistic expression. The creations will range from interpretations of famous works of art to tributes to teams’ favorite artists to expressive works that illustrate our community’s pressing hunger issue.

These incredible structures will come to life starting at 9 am on Sunday (October 21) morning and will remain standing throughout the entire week at Orlando Fashion Square. This will allow mall shoppers to be wowed by these truly unique pieces of art all while becoming more aware of our community’s growing food insecurity.

Guests will be able to vote for their favorite structure by “liking” their photo in an album on Canstruction Orlando’s Facebook Page starting October 22.

After all the structures are taken down on the evening of October 28th, every single piece of food will go straight to Second Harvest Food Bank to be distributed to 500 partner agencies throughout Central Florida.

A huge thank you goes out to the entire Canstruction Committee for working so hard year after year to make this event such a success.

We can’t wait to see what the teams have in store for us this year. They always seem to amaze us with their creativity, innovation, and generosity. Please be sure to stop by Orlando Fashion Square to see it for yourself!
