April Volunteer Spotlight: Molly Halladay

April Volunteer SpotlightDid you know that April was National Volunteer Month? Here at Second Harvest, we might be a little biased, but we think we have the best volunteers! They are hardworking, passionate, always smiling, and motivate everybody around the food bank. To help celebrate National Volunteer Month, we are spotlighting someone who has been with us since the beginning: Molly Halladay.

In 1983, Molly’s husband Homer retired from being a letter carrier. He heard that Second Harvest was looking for drivers, so Molly and her husband started to volunteer their time. They both went where they needed – Homer mostly driving and doing handyman jobs around the food bank, and Molly helping with events, clerical work and answering phone calls. Molly’s husband even got a nickname, Happy Halladay the Handyman, and both became familiar and loved faces around Second Harvest Food Bank.

In the early 2000s, Molly’s husband Homer sadly passed away, but Molly still continued to volunteer her time with Second Harvest. Like clockwork, every Thursday she drives herself to our location on Mercy Drive, meets with our Director of IT/Administrative Services, Judy Soondar, and spends a couple hours with us filing, copying, sorting, or whatever other clerical job that is needed to her, humming away.

When asked why she continues to volunteer with us after all this time, she said, “I love working with the girls. They keep me in the know. I look forward to coming in and working every Thursday.” We are both honored and lucky to have volunteers like Molly. Thank you Molly for donating your time and energy all these years so selflessly, and being a part of the food bank’s legacy! You are truly one of a kind.
