Wawa Comes to Central Florida

Author: Sasha Hausman

We’re going gaga for Wawa over here at the food bank! Let’s start with the basics.

What in the world is a Wawa?
Wawa is your all day, everyday stop for fresh, built-to-order foods, beverages, coffee, fuel services, and surcharge-free ATM’s. The stores offer a large fresh food service selection, including Wawa brands such as built-to-order hoagies, freshly-brewed coffee, hot breakfast sandwiches, built-to-order Specialty Beverages, and an assortment of soups, sides and snacks

What does that mean for us here in Central Florida?
Wawa is flying down to sunny Central Florida! They are opening up 5 stores in 5 weeks. They started today with their first grand opening by SeaWorld. It was fantastic!

During each grand opening event, Wawa will invite local officials, heroes and community members to celebrate in the festivities, sample Wawa products and learn about Wawa’s expected economic and community impact.

Wawa will open six stores in Orlando in 2012, and begin to open its first stores in Tampa in 2013. Throughout the Orlando / Tampa markets, Wawa plans to open 20 stores in 2013, 25 stores in 2014 and 25 stores in 2015, and projects they will open 100 stores in the Orlando/Tampa markets in the next five years.

The new stores will each employ nearly 35 associates, all of which are new positions brought to the area through the development of the stores.

Sounds awesome! But why is the food bank so excited?
Well, of course we are excited for hoagies, coffee, smoothies, etc. Who wouldn’t be? But there are a few more reasons why Wawa means a lot to us.

As Wawa opens five stores in Orlando in five weeks time, they have committed to donating a portion of hoagie sales for these first five stores (up to $5,000 per store) to Second Harvest Food Bank, with a goal to raise and donate $25,000 in five weeks time, and help fight hunger in the Orlando community. Pretty amazing, right?

All the money donated from the hoagie sales will go to support our Building Solutions to Hunger Campaign. Our future facility, located on Mercy Drive in Orlando, will allow us to provide 644 million pounds of food over 20 years. We cannot thank Wawa enough for this incredible support.

So Central Florida, are you ready for Wawa? We hope so! Be sure to check out the stores opening near you. Please visit within the first week to try a hoagie (they are delicious, trust us!). Your lunch will help us provide many meals to our neighbors in need.
