This year, Second Harvest Food Bank teamed up with WESH 2 News on Giving Tuesday. In case you didn’t know, Giving Tuesday is a national day of giving where individuals are encouraged to support their favorite nonprofits. It always falls on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
On Tuesday, December 3, WESH 2 News and Second Harvest set a Giving Tuesday Challenge of raising $10,000, which is equivalent to 40,000 meals for our hungry neighbors. The incredible news… our goal was reached by 8am that morning!
WESH 2 News immediately decided to double the goal. By midnight that night, Central Florida residents had donated $27,943 dollars which is equivalent to 111,772 meals on our Giving Tuesday page. We ended up almost tripling our goal!
And with the help of our social media supporters, we were able to put hunger in the spotlight on Twitter and Facebook. Our Facebook and Twitter channels were blowing up with shares, RTs and mentions of our Giving Tuesday challenge and Central Florida hunger statistics. Our online community really stepped up to the plate and supported us on this day of giving.
A big thanks to the 109 individual who supported our Giving Tuesday thunderclap. A thunderclap is a really cool online tool that blasts out a timed Facebook post or tweet from all your supporters. Our thunderclap ended up having a social reach of 220,915 people on December 3!
Another big thanks goes out to our Giving Tuesday Social Media Ambassadors … Bess Auer: BessAuer.com and FlBlogcon; Brian Wilson: Central Florida Top 5; Jen Vargas: Central Florida Top 5 & #Glass4Good; Jennifer Brady: OrlandoFLConnections; Christine Pittman: CooktheStory; Rashmi Primlani: The Primlani Kitchen; Meghan Roth: frommarriedtomerry; Jackson Auer: Beaherorun; Adriana Martin: Adrianas Best Recipes. They helped us get the word out through their blogs and social media channels. With their support, we were able to reach so many more individuals.
A very special thanks goes out to our Giving Tuesday partner WESH 2 News! This campaign would not have been possible without the support of WESH General Manager Jim Carter, Executive Producer Marcie Gogolski and the entire WESH 2 News team. Giving Tuesday dominated WESH 2 News that morning and was all over their social media channels. They took this campaign to another level with TV media coverage!
We always say that we are fortunate to live in such a giving community. But Giving Tuesday showed us that we’re also lucky to be part of a very giving online community.
On behalf of so many families, seniors and kids who don’t have enough to eat in our community, thank you for your generous support on Giving Tuesday!
